As expected, Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has decided against joining Inter and will instead sign for Atletico Madrid tomorrow.

The Nerazzurri had agreed personal terms with the veteran, as confirmed by director Beppe Marotta, but then Atletico Madrid came in with a proposal of their own.

He turns 34 next month and is eager to make a return home to Spain for the first time since leaving for Olympique Marseille in 2010.

Chelsea have agreed to let Azpilicueta leave as a free agent, which they consider a thank you for his 11 years of faithful service at Stamford Bridge.

According to Sky Sport Italia, the decision has now been made and he will sign the contract on Thursday.

Inter were aware that this was likely to happen, as Azpilicueta’s family is pushing him for a return to their homeland.

Meanwhile, the Champions League Finalists had hoped that he would join them to be part of the three-man defence as a replacement for Milan Skriniar, who moved as a free agent to Paris Saint-Germain.
